BSOC: Sagamore Teams Face Tough Assignments In Sectionals

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

The four team boys’ soccer sectional involving Montgomery County schools has a familiar look. For
the third straight year, Crawfordsville and North
Montgomery
are scheduled for a first round showdown. This comes on
the heels of a 1-0 Crawfordsville victory in the regular season match a little
over a week ago.Southmont would appear to have drawn a break with the pairings.
The Mounties will take on North Putnam. The Mounties destroyed the Cougars in
an early season match; 13-0Motivation will surely be on the side of the
Chargers in their battle with the Athenians. Crawfordsville has won the first
round battles each of the last two seasons.

Frankfort’s
highly regarded team will head into action in the Lafayette Sectional. The Hot
Dogs drew Lafayette Central Catholic in the first round. If they defeat the
nights, a likely second round match with McCutcheon awaits.

If it wasn’t for bad luck, the Lebanon team would have no luck at
all. The Tigers fall into the sectional at powerful Zionsville and immediately
drew the hosts in the first round. Western Boone will face University in the
other half of the bracket. The bad luck didn’t stop with Lebanon.
Tri-West drew the hosts at Brownsburg and Danville
did likewise at Avon.

Junior
Craig Fairley may get all the limelight after Crawfordsville’s latest
win.

For the second straight year, the junior running back managed to set
the Athenians’ school rushing yards record under a patchwork offensive line.

Frustrated after being held to under 100 yards and his lowest rushing
total of the season in last week’s stunning loss to Beech Grove, Fairley and the
Athenians’ offensive line recommitted themselves to power run game Friday night.

So he’s not taking the credit. Nor should he.

Fairley rushed for
a school-record 308 yards and scored five touchdowns but the Athenians needed
John Rogers’ pressure to force a Tri-West senior quarterback Jake Allen into a
missed two-point conversion with under a minute remaining for a 35-33 win.

“I was just unhappy. I wanted to prove I could do a lot better than what
I should,” said Fairley, who broke his rushing record by two yards after having
305 in last year’s Homecoming game against Beech Grove. “The line controlled
everything up front. They always do. They did a great job tonight and got great
blocking. With Jordan (Standefer) back (at quarterback) and him throwing the
deep ball, it helps the run game. Our wide receivers blocked really great, too.”

Crawfordsville (4-2, 4-0 SAC) survived a late-game defensive collapse
and still shares the top spot in the conference standings with county-rival
North Montgomery (6-0, 4-0 SAC).

North Montgomery blew out conference
foe Lebanon 52-12 Friday night to stay right with its county foe.

But
this week, when the Athenians needed their defense to hold on, they responded –
in game-saving fashion.

Fairley rushed for 200 yards and scored four of
his five touchdowns in the first half – including his longest – a 69-yard score
– on the second play of the game.

He also had touchdown runs of 14, 19,
3 and 34 yards – with his final one coming near the end of the third quarter.

Crawfordsville coach Rex Ryker planned on getting the Athenians back to
their old style of football and dominating with the run game.

“We
brought back a couple of power run plays,” Ryker said. “We take great pride in
being able to run the ball and to run in a physical fashion. We did that
tonight. It was more enjoyable to watch than big run after big
run.”

Crawfordsville led 28-14 at half, then 35-21 at the end of the
third quarter and it looked like the Athenians would rush the game
away.

But just like last year, when Crawfordsville rallied from a
14-point second-half deficit and won on Matt Mummert’s field goal with 1.5
seconds left, this game came down to the final minutes.

This time, it was
Tri-West (4-2, 2-2 SAC) who made the rally.

Trailing by 14 and deep into
the fourth quarter, the Bruins scored twice in the final five minutes.

Senior running back Caleb Ross (14 carries, 115 yards) scored on a
four-yard run with 4:38 left to cut the lead to 35-27 after the extra point
clanged off the front right upright. It proved to be a costly miss.

Tri-West recovered the ensuing onside kick after the ball bounced in and
out of a Crawfordsville player’s hands and Allen (20-of-28, 216 yards) led the
Bruins downfield

He completed a seven-play, 56-yard drive with a
seven-yard rushing touchdown to pull the Bruins within 35-33 with 1:28
remaining.

They had to go for two.

After calling timeout, the
Bruins set up the play. As they line up, Rogers remembered what Ryker had been
drilling the Athenians’ defense on all week – their checklist of
responsibility.

Rogers noticed no one was on him and he had a free path
to the quarterback.

After the snap, he chased after Allen on the right
side forcing him to scramble to his left and throw an incomplete pass well short
of the goal line.

“Coach (Ryker) was talking to us all week about our
checklist of responsibility,” Rogers said. “I manned up and didn’t have any
responsibility. I just went after the quarterback.”

Ryker acknowledged
Rogers plays with that kind of intensity and energy every play.

“John
Rogers plays with nothing but heart,” Ryker said. “He has earned his position
and plays with everything he has. He’s the kind of kid that coaches wish they
could more of.

“He made a couple plays out there just out of pure
effort.”

Crawfordsville next plays conference rival Lebanon at 7 p.m.
next Friday in its Homecoming game.

THE PAPER

LINDEN
– Coach Mike Margeson keeps seeing the North Montgomery High School
boys soccer team inch closer to a Sagamore Athletic Conference win.

This time the Chargers rallied to tie the game late, before seeing all that second-half magic go for naught.

Visiting Tri-West scored with four minutes left and defeated North Montgomery 2-1 Monday afternoon.

Junior
Jordan Galloway scored the Chargers’ lone goal off an assist from
senior Kal Airey with 15 minutes left. But Tri-West – who stayed
undefeated in the conference with the win – answered in the final five
minutes.

“It was another one of those games. It was pretty well-played,” Margeson said. “Tri-West is a great team.”

North Montgomery (4-7-1, 0-5 SAC) next plays county- and conference rival Crawfordsville at 7 p.m. Thursday at Crawfordsville.

North Montgomery’s seniors have never beaten the Athenians’ in their four-year careers.

“I
don’t think we’re going to have any trouble for that one,” Margeson
said. “Our seniors really want to go out with win against
Crawfordsville.”

FB: Crawfordsville, North Montgomery Move To Front Of Pack

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

It is beginning to look like October 10th is going
to be D-Day in the Sagamore Conference. That is the night that Crawfordsville
will travel to North Montgomery. Those two
squads seized early control of the league race Friday night. Still, Danville and Tri-West may
yet have something to say about determining the conference champion.

Here is a look at Friday night’s action.

The big game of the evening was at Tri-West where the
unbeaten Bruins tangled with North Montgomery which
had also yet to taste defeat. The Chargers relentless ground attack and a case
of fumbleitis on the part of Tri-West led to a relatively easy 44-21 win for
the visitors from Montgomery
County
.

Danville
stayed in contention by dumping Southmont 37-21. The victory leaves the
Warriors 2-1 in league play with dates still remaining versus both Tri-West and
North Montgomery. The Mounties drop to 0-2 in
league play.

For the second week in a row, Crawfordsville escaped a close
contest. This time it was a 27-20 win over hard luck Western Boone. The victory
gives the Athenians the outright lead in the conference race at 3-0. However,
they not only still have North Montgomery on
the schedule, they also are yet to play Tri-West.

Lebanon
broke into the win column with a 17-6 victory over Frankfort. Don’t count the Tigers out. Their
murderous pre-conference schedule prepares them well for the rigors of Sagamore
action.

FB: 3A #8 North Montgomery makes 2A #14 Tri-West pay, 44-21

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

LIZTON – “Hang on to the ball, boys!”

You can bet that was the message delivered in both locker rooms at halftime of the Sept. 12 Sagamore Conference clash between Class 3A No. 8 North Montgomery and 2A No. 14 Tri-West Hendricks. It is also a safe bet that the message was delivered more sternly in the Bruins’ quarters.

Fumbles played a major role in a first half that saw North Montgomery take a 24-7 lead into intermission. Unfortunately, the fumble bug continued to haunt host Tri-West in the second half, allowing the Chargin’ Chargers to cruise to a 44-21 victory.

Both teams stalled on their initial drives in this game. Tri-West, after being stopped near midfield, lofted a spectacular punt that pinned the Chargers at their own 2-yard line. North Montgomery (4-0 overall, 2-0 Sagamore) could not move the ball and was forced to punt from its five.

It was one of the key plays in the game.

The punt was shanked and traveled only 19 yards, coming down to the Bruins at the North Montgomery 24. Tri-West, however, muffed the punt, and the Chargers recovered.

Instead of the Bruins having the ball and a short field in front of them, the Chargers’ high-powered offense got a second chance. As good teams do, North Montgomery quickly took advantage, driving 76 yards for the game’s first score.

The drive was capped on a one-yard plunge from quarterback Nathan Dale, and a successful two-point conversion made the score 8-0 late in the first quarter.

Tri-West (3-1, 1-1) again failed to move the ball, and the Chargers regained possession at their own 40. They manufactured a beautiful drive, mixing a powerful rushing attack with a sparse but incredibly efficient passing game.

Ethan Carpenter topped it off with a run up the middle from six yards out, and it was 16-0 in favor of the visitor early in the second period.

After another failed Tri-West drive, the fumbling problem hit the Chargers when they misplayed the Bruins’ punt and Tri-West recovered on the North Montgomery 10. On the second play, Bruin quarterback Jake Allen kept the ball around the right side to score from five yards out and cut the lead to 16-7.

North Montgomery, however, responded with another beautiful drive. This time the Chargers hit paydirt through the air when Dale found Brett Stamper on a six-yard scoring pass to make it 24-7.

That capped the scoring in the first half, when North Montgomery rushed for 143 yards and Dale completed all eight of his pass attempts.

Tri-West apparently didn’t get the memo about protecting the ball. The Bruins opened the second half by fumbling the kickoff, and North Montgomery recovered. Facing a short field, North Montgomery struck quickly.

Carpenter again found the end zone, this time from 12 yards out. The two-point conversion failed, but the Chargers still led 30-7 and seemed completely in control.

Appearances can be deceiving.

Allen broke loose for a 61-yard gallop on the ensuing Tri-West possession, and his run set up a three-yard touchdown run from running back Thomas O’Neal that cut the lead to 30-14. The Bruins then recovered an onside kick to quickly regain possession, and Allen again set them up in scoring position with an 18-yard scamper that produced 1st and goal at the North Montgomery 5.

That set up the second key play of the contest.

On second down, Tri-West again fumbled the ball away. That ended the Bruins’ first chance to cut the lead to one score, and they got a second shot after North Montgomery could not move.

Taking over at midfield, however, the Bruins quickly drove to the Charger 20 but stalled. After failing to convert on fourth down, they would not get a third chance.

North Montgomery responded by going on a sustained drive. This time fullback Isaac McGaughey finished from 12 yards away, and the score was 36-14.

A subsequent Bruin fumble led to yet another Charger score before Tri-West went on a drive late in the game to create the 44-21 final.

Next up for North Montgomery is a Sept. 19 home Sagamore date with Lebanon (1-3, 1-1), a 17-6 Week 4 winner over Frankfort. Tri-West, meanwhile, will travel to Southmont next Friday for a conference game against the Mounties (1-3, 0-2), a 37-21 victim to Danville.

THE PAPER

LIZTON – Jim Kochert needed only one word to describe Saturday’s Sagamore Athletic Conference boys soccer game – frustrating.

Crawfordsville
High School’s coach lost one player, senior James Miller, with an
injured ankle and watched the Athenians struggle in a physical game.

Conference rival Tri-West shut out visiting Crawfordsville 2-0, giving the Athenians their first conference loss.

The defeat ended Crawfordsville’s two-game winning streak.

Crawfordsville’s (4-2, 2-1 SAC) senior goalie Miguel Salazar had five saves.

“It was a relatively physical game,” Kochert said. “Tri-West was a good team, a quick team . . . It’s frustrating.”

Crawfordsville
next plays at 5 p.m. Wednesday at home against South Vermillion then
faces conference foe Frankfort on Wednesday.
